Quantum Dots – Versatile Nanocrystals with Diverse Applications

Quantum Dots (QD) are tiny man-made nanocrystals that emit light of specific frequencies when stimulated by an external source such as electricity or light. They can be produced via different processes such as colloidal synthesis, fabrication, viral assembly, electrochemical assembly, bulk manufacturing, and cadmium free QD technology. Of these, colloidal synthesis is the most widely used as it has the potential to produce QDs on a large scale.

Quantum dots are of interest in a wide variety of applications because of their tunable properties. Commercial applications of QDs are present in the optoelectronics, optical, electronic, biological, environmental, communications, computing, renewable energy, and security markets. These applications include LEDs, transistors, solar cells, diode lasers and second-harmonic generation, quantum computing, medical imaging, inkjet printing, and spin-coating.
