[Report + Infographic] Electric Vehicles – patents and technology landscape

We recently released an IP Intelligence report that studied the patent portfolio of Tesla Motors and placed it in the context of the overall electric vehicle technology landscape. One of the immediate findings was the fact that Tesla had a number of patents in the battery and charging area. These patents form around 60% of Tesla’s portfolio. We took a closer look at these patents and compared them to those held by other companies. The insights obtained are provided in the report. We have also created an infographic that combines the above patent data with electric vehicle market data. Feel free to check out our other white papers and...

Tesla vs. The Rest – Battery and Charging Patents (Free Report)

There has been a buzz recently in the electric vehicle industry after Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Motors announced in a blog post that they were “open sourcing” their patents. He went on to say that “… Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology.” This was followed by BMW stating that it too was not averse to sharing it’s own battery technology, that it had jointly developed with Samsung. There were other developments, like Tesla’s decision to set up a large factory in Nevada to manufacture Lithium batteries in partnership with Panasonic. Toyota, who partnered with Tesla for battery-electric powertrains in 2010, have decided to let their agreement lapse at the end...

Patent landscaping for HVAC System Fault Detection

Patent landscaping for HVAC System Fault Detection

Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) fault detection and diagnosis is important from a preventive maintenance standpoint. Downtime for large HVAC systems is not desirable due to the increased costs incurred in operations and energy consumption. Subsequently, many organizations have been investing capital and efforts to tackle this problem. We studied the patent landscape of HVAC fault detection technologies. Our findings show a consistent increase in the number of patent filings over the last decade. LG tops the list of patent asset holders, even though its earliest filing is relatively recent (1996). On the other hand, the filings of General Motors in this technology area have tapered off in the recent years. Geographically, the US and China are the...

Introducing translation capabilities in Relecura

Introducing translation capabilities in Relecura

Given that companies seek patent protection in various parts of the world to protect their markets, patents are being filed in a variety of languages which utilize diverse scripts. This adds an additional wrinkle in executing patent searches and ensuring that they are comprehensive. We have integrated Google Translate into Relecura to machine translate patent text. You can now read patent documents (that feature full text data) in over 80 different languages. Machine translation algorithms have improved substantially over the years. Some even have a self-learning aspect, such that the accuracy of the output improves with every translation carried out. We have activated this feature for our existing customers and would love to receive feedback. In case, you are...
