LES Webinar – Patents in IoT (Internet of Things)

Relecura will participate in the upcoming LES webinar on “IoT Technology and IP Commercialization Trends”. The Relecura team will describe how patent analytics and IP commercialization trends can help one better understand the technology landscape and competitive environment in IoT, as well as support better decision-making by participating companies.

The rapid growth of the “Internet of Things” (IoT) in recent times has created a lot of buzz and made the sector a fixture in the technology press. The predictions about its market size and adoption vary. Gartner estimates that there will be nearly 21 billion IoT-based devices by 2020. IDC forecasts that the worldwide IoT market will grow from $655.8 billion in 2014 to $1.7 trillion in 2020, with a compound annual growth rate of 16.9%.

A combination of factors has been responsible for IoT’s growth. These include pervasive low cost connected devices, standardization of connection protocols, data analytics solutions, and cloud computing to handle large volumes of disparate, unstructured data in real-time.

Since IoT encompasses multiple technologies and application areas, one of the better ways to understand this varied and dynamic area, is by using taxonomies. The taxonomies of the relevant technologies and applications, when applied to patent portfolio, generate analytics and insights on the various players in the IoT ecosystem. In addition, tracking IP commercialization trends provides pointers to the sub-technologies and applications being worked on by different companies and their strategy focus. Details of these approaches will be presented and discussed during the webinar.
