Tencent – China’s low-key Internet Giant

Tencent Holdings is a Chinese investment holding company principally involved in providing value-added services (VAS) and online advertising services. Tencent is a unique combination of investment corporation, Internet conglomerate, and gaming company – being among the largest in the world in each of these categories. It belongs to China’s triumvirate of Internet giants jointly referred to as “BAT” (Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent). Tencent’s headquarters are in Nanshan District, Shenzhen.

 The company operates through three main segments. The VAS segment provisions online/mobile games, community value-added services and applications across various Internet and mobile platforms. The Online Advertising segment is engaged in serving display-based and performance based online advertising. The third segment has various offerings that include cloud and payment services.

Tencent is one of the top ten most valuable companies in the world with surging numbers for its revenues, net profit, stock price and active users. As of October 2017, the company’s market cap stood at US$432.09 billion.
